Present: Mrs I/I/S/M/A/N/K/K/K/I/K/C = 12. Apologies: Mrs Co/To

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!
What a wonderful day was spent talking, laughing and renewing friendships and most of all EATING! The Potluck lunch was a huge success with many wonderful dishes being presented by members and although I say it myself…the roast chicken was delicious…cooked in my new nano/stream oven!

After a time spent relaxing members had a meeting and discussed many new ideas for the IWA. We decided an outline for the new programme for 2010. Some members hoped that:

1. another evening/speaker would be possible – for family/guests.
Others voted for:
2. An international cooking group in order to promote charity focussed on women’s needs
3. Another visit to the OYSTERs at Kisakata/Nikaho
4. A factory visit to TAKASHIMIZU Rice Wine making in Goshono
5. Another visit to JIZAIYA – for family/guests
6. Geijistu Mura/onsen/blueberry picking/Warabeza??
7. Learning how to play CANASTA
8. Origami folding workshop
9. Walking
10. Another visit to KENKO NO MORI – for family/guests
11. Mrs I introduced the idea of a ‘couples’ potluck supper club’ outside IWA format

Mrs I introduced an English book lending library for those who are interested – novels etc.
Any member wishing to add to this with English or Japanese books, please bring them to the next meeting.

Mrs S to receive 5,000yen from IWA for setting up the blogg, which all members agreed is a wonderful blogg and wonderful advertising for IWA. Links are already in the web!

Mrs I received 1,000 for being the host for 2 meetings.

Mrs S is to promote IWA in Akita in a local circular to try to increase membership.
A ‘special thank you’ was given to Mrs M/K/S for all their hard work for the 18 Nov. Animation Meeting. The evening was a huge success due to all their hard work. Mrs I was unable to attend, as she was absent in hospital on that evening.

Whilst chatting, members very kindly tidied up the kitchen and put things away, which was a tremendous help for Mrs I…THANK YOU ALL!

Members are reminded to try to KEEP THE ENGLISH GOING at meetings and take this very unique opportunity!

Please remember to check the blogg regularly and try to POST COMMENTS. Next meeting’s date has not yet been decided. JANUARY WILL BE A HOLIDAY.

Please check the blogg for further information regarding CHARCOAL MAKING at KENKO NO MORI on 19/20 December. This IS NOT AN IWA MEETING BUT AN EXTRA and a wonderful opportunity.

WISHING ALL MEMBERS & FAMILY A SAFE AND HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON

IWA November Meeting

On the evening of Wednesday, 18 November 2009, 13 IWA members and families gathered at Mrs. Ic's house to listen to AIU's Professor Darren Ashmore give an informative and insightful lecture on the origins of Japanese animation.

Using a DVD of Lupin the 3rd as a backdrop, Dr Ashmore began with the historical roots of modern manga. Using pictures and anecdotes from history, he outlined the development of a uniquely Japanese drawing style, focussing on the 12th century Choujuu giga (lit. 'animal-person caricatures'), and the famous 19th century artist Hokusai's character portraits. He also detailed the inspirations provided by Japanese culture, history and religion. After the arrival of Commodore Perry in the 18th century, some Japanese manga artists began to apply their skills to political satire, as seen in publications such as The Japan Punch.

From then on, the unique east-west combination of drawing and storytelling (also heavily inspired by western novels, art, and early American television serials, etc.) continued to flourish until the arrival of Tezuka Osamu's Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atomu), which marked the birth of modern anime. Dr Ashmore's student then gave a brief talk about popular modern manga, and passed around examples for the audience to see.

A pot luck dinner followed the lecture, and IWA members feasted upon a wide range of beautifully-presented international foods including Japanese, local Akita, Italian, Indian, and general Western food; salads and vegetables, followed by coffee, cake and fruit for dessert.

To top off the success of the evening, our first real snowfall of the year occurred as members drove home. A magical ending to a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Attending: Ms. Kaw/Car/Con/Sho/Ito/Kur/Kon/Mor, Mr Ic and Ms Nar and Tom and their husbands.

6th Meeting at Goto San's family orchard farm

6th IWA Meeting held at Goto San’s family orchard farm on Friday 16 October 2009.Off the Route 13 past Kawabe I.C. left before Coco Cola Factory.

Attending: Ms. Ku/As/Ic/Tax2/G/Kub. A very rainy day but dried as the day progressed and we were able to see the orchard in between the rain showers.

A slight problem in setting off for delays but once sorted the day ran very smoothly.

Members are again reminded to be punctual for events as it is not fair for other members to be kept waiting. Thank you for your co-operation with this request. Please make sure you have the contact mobile numbers with you for the event.

Don’t forget that this farm was used for the location for the famous South Korean film star Lee Byonhen and film crew in May 2009. We were able to see the photos of this very memorable event.

Whilst at the orchard we learnt so much about APPLES and PEARS…I did not know that there were so many different bands of apples… Fuji/Sekaiichi/Shinano sweet/Ryouka/Kinsei/Ourin/Akita Gold, the most popular being Beniakari. The owner explained many things about the apples and we were able to sample many of the apples grown on site. The family has been running this orchard farm for over 60 years and planted the trees over this time. The youngest bearing fruit tree being 3 years old and the oldest about 55.

The family farmhouse, which is built in the traditional Japanese style, with both Japanese and Chinese landscaped gardens, is set in its own land covering an area of over 50 hectares. (1 hectare = 10,000 square metres. 1 hectare = 2,471 acres. 1 acre = 43,560 square feet, just to give you an idea!)

In order to achieve pollination over 20,000 natural bees are attracted by the scent of natural Lilies and the apple blossoms on the farm. These bees are not ‘employed’ but arrive naturally on the farm each year. Even if the temperature is low they will still pollinate.

During the course of one year the trees are sprayed with natural pesticides ten times to keep away unwanted bugs which may bore into the fruit and lay eggs and eat from the inside.

Chicken and cow natural fertilizer is used at the base of the tress in order to nourish the roots.

The owner has purposely grown the trees in a way that they are not very tall (almost Bonsai influence) which enables picking to be carried out quite easily. Foil sheeting is spread around at the base of each tree to increase the reflection of the sunlight up onto the hanging fruit.

Apple picking begins around September and finishes around 20 November. Then the boxing up takes place and the whole operation is usually finished by December 20.

1,100 boxes of apples are ordered to be sent all over Japan even as far as Okinawa and Kikaijima.

Rice, prunes, Ballard pears, blue berries, nashi and peaches are also grown during the year.
Regarding Ballard pears…when they are picked off the tree they are ‘put to rest’ for 20 days at normal room temperature. According to the type of fruit the ‘resting’ time differs.

Approximately 400 seasonal farm labourers are employed over the year to help with the running of the farm.

Members enjoyed a potluck lunch and talking together in the farmhouse on tatami with views of the beautiful gardens.

A gift was presented to the farm owner on behalf of IWA and we extended our thanks for a wonderful day out. IWA in Akita thanks Ms Goto for a very wonderful and memorable day and we would be privileged to be able to visit again. Thank you. JI

OYSTER EATING at KISAKATA Akita on Wednesday 29 July 09. J.I.

5 ladies set off from Mr Donuts at 9.35 a.m. Mrs K drove us expertly to the Oyster Shop at Kisakata. Mrs K has been visiting this particular shop for 15 years and it is highly recommended.

Tsujida San Shop. For navigation and reference Tel: 018-4433052/Nikaho City.
Free dial: 0120 511639

Located on Route 7 with a view of Choukai San Mountain before us, we arrived within 1-½ hours, passing through NIKAHO main street, which has a Science Museum for Children and lots of interesting places to visit. This area was reclaimed from the sea and is now fertile with rice fields.

We passed 2 hotels with onsen, which can be visited as HIGAIRI (day onsen visit) too. At one of the two hotels called Seaside Hotel we enjoyed a delicious lunch including a free onsen pass. 3 ladies took up the offer and enjoyed a lovely onsen overlooking the sea, all to ourselves. Sunsets here are beautiful and you can view the sunset whilst dipping in the onsen!

he IWA GAKI (Iwa Oysters) are very large and delicious and at their best during August. In Europe Oysters tend to be avoided in the months without an ‘R’ in them, so I was rather nervous as July and August don’t have the ‘R’.

The oysters we ate were about 7 and 8 years in growth and were really delicious. Mrs K ordered a lot to be delivered to friends and family, as she does each year. Prices ranged from 300 to 500 Yen and were well worth it!

The famous BASHO the Japanese poet visited this area and there is a very old Shrine, which we were going to visit but then the heavens opened and we decided not to.

Basho visited a lot of places in Touhoku and it is worth studying this famous poet as he is very well recognized internationally.

Please enjoy the photos and I highly recommend that IWA make this an outing next year – I for one shall certainly visit again as the OYSTERS WERE DELICIOUS!

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION in AKITA
5th Meeting CHERRY PICKING REPORT 1st July 2009 Met at Mr Donunts Aeon Goshono. Left at 9.40 a.m. J.I.

Despite the rain, which eventually stopped, we arrived at JUMONJI SAKURANBOU MATSURI. Telephone number for navigation 0182-23-9320.

This takes place between mid June and the first week in July. Six members took part; Mrs I/K/N/A/M and Mrs K drove us superbly and safely there and back.

Maybe because of the rain or maybe towards the end of the season we managed to have the whole Tano Tsuyoshi Cherry Farm to ourselves.

We ate as many as we could and slowly asked questions and learnt that there are so many different kinds of cherries. Napoleon, Satonishiki and Benishouhou.
Also, that the farm is roughly 50 years old and has been in the same family. We met 3 generations of the family there picking and sorting the cherries by size and type.

The trees there bearing fruit were planted 6 to 50 years ago. There were about 100 trees on the farm covering an area of 20 R. Mitsubachi and Mame Kobachi bees are owned and employed to pollinate the flowers. Pollination is also done manually with Ostrich feathers on long sticks. Plastic coverings are arranged over the trees to keep rain off to prevent damage and also protect the cherries from birds. Antiseptic is used on the fruit to stop any decay; this loses its toxic strength after a few hours. On harvesting, great care is taken and they are manually sorting by size and type. The farm is linked to The Japan Agricultural Farmers Association and the cherries are sent to many places throughout Japan. So far they have sent their cherries to Hokkaido, Miyazaki and Kagoshima.
Lunch was taken at a very authentic Japanese restaurant, in Furusato Mura, serving traditional Akita udon(Inaniwa udon), which was delicious! Here wonderful conversation between the ladies took place, sharing many ‘international experiences’ and making a firmer bond of friendship between members of IWA.

Recommending IWA should visit here again, however, it could be a little on the expensive side.

Friday 19 June 2009 J.I.
Through an introduction of Mrs S 13 members of the IWA attended the 4th meeting at KENKO NO MORI and were hosted by Mr Seitaro San. Mrs I/K and S arrived very early to start the cooking as the ladies had decided to prepare Thai chicken noodle soup and Thai chicken. This involved lots of work, bringing all their own utensils and ingredients. Some ladies met at Mr Donuts and arrived by 10 a.m.

PUNCTUALITY for all members taking part in IWA activities must be stressed.

Just a note to remind members that when accepting transport to make a contribution towards petrol costs – thank you.

We had a wonderful day as the sun shone brilliantly; we were so lucky with the weather.
After a short introduction by Mr Seitaro we set off into the forest. Mr Seitaro explained that we were going to experience the forest watching us rather than us observing the forest. For me this was a new and excited interpretation, as I had never thought of it like that before. All ladies wore hats, long sleeved shirts and long trousers and long boots to protect themselves against bees, insects and snakebites. It was a very exciting experience.

On arriving at the forest we had to knock on a placard to announce our entering and ask for permission to enter. Perhaps this was a kind of Shinto Animism practice?

We all listened to Mr Seitaro’s anecdotes, which were very fascinating regarding things like what one would do if one saw a bear!! - We climbed various steep banks, helping one another to succeed in some cases and crossed felled tree bridges and eventually safely returned to the base area.

Mrs I/K/S had been so busy in preparing the delicious food, which was shared with everyone there.

Later, the ladies listened to a talk by Mr Seitaro, which was most informative.

JIZAIYA a wonderful experience, visiting

Wednesday May 20 2009 Report by J. I.

Through the introduction of Ms S.S.the IWA in Akita (for its 3rd meeting) was introduced to a wonderful experience, visiting JIZAIYA http://homepage3.nifty.com/jizaiya/

The weather was perfect and our 6 members set off in 2 cars from Ms I’s house by 9.45 a.m. After a short drive of about 35 minutes on Route 13 and 46 we arrived at Jizaiya and were welcomed there by Mr & Mrs Kawai.

Jizaiya is a large, old, Japanese traditional farmhouse, which has been in the family of Mr Kawai for 50/60 years. It has a great feeling of space and charm. It’s set in rural surroundings with nature everywhere to be seen and the birds singing beautifully.

Food prepared is almost all organic and everything is very organized and very clean and the day’s programme well arranged.

After familiarizing ourselves with the house we all set off, with Mr Kawai in front, on our country walk away from the hectic life we all lead.

Mr Kawai showed us so many interesting facts about the plants and shrubs and how to pick them and how they are used. The mountain vegetables we picked we brought back to the house and Mrs Kawai cooked Tempura…needless to say they were delicious.

Whilst at Jizaiya we had a lot of friendly conversation, mainly English and Mr Kawai demonstrated how we would make KIRITAMPO and Salmon Rice Balls(DAMAKO). They had already made a wonderful vegetable stew/soup, which had been cooked over the traditional charcoal, open fire(the origin of the name Jizaiya comes from Jizai-kagi at the open fire). There we toasted the Kiritampo. Then with the cool breeze drifting through the house we sat on tattami and had a real banquet with many dishes Mrs Kawai had prepared whilst we were out walking.

For me, still a visitor to Akita from the big smoke of Kamakura, this was a fantastic day, travelling back in time with a most relaxing, cordial, rewarding and fulfilling atmosphere.

Each member paid 2,000Yen for this wonderful gourmet experience! Plus we brought home loads of food to share with our family members. Value for money!!!

I think the IWA should visit Jizaiya at least once a year.

Jizaiya is generally closed from the beginning of November until May. Bookings for the other times should be made in advance, as it is very popular.
